Hispano vs. Mexican

Gustavo Arellano
Gustavo Arellano

This woman didn’t leave her name or number, but she’s angry about a portion of this week’s feature in which “Ask a Mexican” columnist Gustavo Arellano asks a New Mexican. Her voicemail is awesome. The delivery is fantastic, full of venom but with that particular lilt you only get around here.

"Marisa. I like your paper usually. I'm kinda pissed today. Who is this Joseph Baca that's trying to say that Hispanos in New Mexico are not formerly Europeans many of them? What is he? Is he a MEXICAN? And these Hispanos were also being hanged in the mid 1800s—even if their skin wasn't brown but pink. So why don't you correct that misnomer, his blurb: "Are there still people who call themselves Hispanos or is that some Chicano myth?" Well, it's a Chicano myth, apparently. But it's not a Hispano myth. Get it straight, lady. How long have you lived in this state? And where the hell is Joseph Baca from?"

(To answer, I’ve lived here all my life except for a couple of single-digit years I don’t remember.)

She called back and added:

"Thank you for Jerry Ortiz y Pino's encapsulation of the special session at the Legislature. It was full of information and understanding. It helped a lot. Thank you."

No no, ma’am. Thank YOU.

  • To the angry Europhile  [ Mon Mar 15 2010 4:44 PM ]

En primer lugar, puesto que usted insinua que es Espanola o Europea, deberiamos discutir este tema en Espanol, mi primer idioma. That said, although this piece was written in humor, as you clearly failed to see, much of my statement was written after listening to a discussion by former State Historian and current director of the Hispanic Cultural Center, Estevan Rael-Galvez, who argued that any traces of Spanish blood are long ago lost in the mixing of races. And if you are trying to lay claim to Spanish heritage, take heed of one of your fellow Europeans wise words "the lady doth protest too much, me thinks...". Let me address some of your questions and statements. I am a Native New Mexican, from a long, long line of Native New Mexicans. I am proud to be from here and I actually consider myself a Chicano, a rare hybrid of Indian, Mexican and whatever blood lines flow through my veins. As a matter of fact, I will argue that any traces of Spanish blood in my veins, as is the case with most New Mexicans, are probably diluted by whatever other lines have been intermixed with my family's over time - it's possible that I may be closer in lineage to people who may have arrived on the Mayflower - than I am to any Conquistador. I do not consider myself European and certainly not Spanish and would be much more proud to claim roots in the gorgeous country that is Mexico. I am not a Europhile, do not like Castilian Spanish, I think their culture and cuisine is bland and tasteless, and the only pink part on my body, turns that way after consuming my beloved Hatch Chile with large quantities of good Mexican tequila. And just so there is no confusion, I am Joseph Baca, respondent to Gustavo Arellano's questionairre.

    Baca with the brilliant retort.

  • Chicano v. Hispano  [ Thu Apr 22 2010 3:26 PM ]

I know many people of hispanic descent in New Mexico have adopted the term 'Chicano', but I don't think it's a good term since it excludes a lot of people. My family came to New Mexico in the late 1600s and there has not been much intermarriage outside of the hispanic culture until my mother's generation. (I'm 33; she's 55.) I can claim only one Native American ancestor (my great-grandmother was 100% Navajo) and a few Anglos, with the rest being overwhelmingly Spanish. In fact my great-great-grandfather was a 'peninsulare'--he was conceived in New Mexico but sent back to Spain to be born! 'Hispano' or 'nuevomejicano' are the terms I use to describe myself and I can't imagine using anything else. 'Chicano' may very well describe other hispanics, but not myself.

God you people piss me off I am native american and mexican from New Mexico. Nobody here actually considers the history of this state, the reason for the differences in terms is because of the diversity in ethnicity. This state has a history directly linked to Spain... hence the hispanic and spanish terms to oneself and their people. These Spaniards mixed withe the natives... hence mexican or chicano. Using the word Chicano is not a bad thing it's a term that many Mexican Americans all decided on in the 70's to discribe themseves which had to do with the political movement in which they were all caught up in. Considering the "nuevo names" the younger generation have thought up such as "Thugs" and "G" the names Chicano and Latino and Hispanic sound ok and we actually go by in New Mexico. It is also a regional thing and just so you all know this is one of the only state that actually makes a distictive claim to families being from Spain. Fighting over which is the correct term is silly because if you want to do that no person of latin decent in their right mind would so claim to be "Hispanic" it is a messed up generic term made up by the US government to dicribe and generalize all Latins. Kinda like calling all native americans "Indians". Peace

At times like this it's evident there is plenty of Neanderthal still swimming in the gene pool too...
