Boogie with Buika

Thursday, Mar 24: Buika

Javi Rojo

Grammy award winning Spanish songstress Concha Buika performs on Thursday, March 24, at the National Hispanic Cultural Center's Albuquerque Journal Theater. The charming chanteuse began her musical career in the rhythm section, mastering the bass and percussion used in the complex, poly-rhythmic compositions heard around her hometown of Palma de Mallorca but she made eventually made her musical reputation as a singer of popular folk songs.

A poet and producer as well as a vocalist, Buika's timbre, range and stylistic turns have been compared to Nina Simone, Billie Holiday and Edith Piaf. Her oeuvre includes collaborations with jazz notables like Pat Metheny and Chick Corea as well as popular Portugeuse singer Mariza and sitarist/composer Anoushka Shankar, the daughter of Ravi and half sister of Norah Jones. Buika draws from vast knowledge and experience in Continental, African and jazz music traditions to engender musical encounters that embody a far-ranging fusion of sound and vision. Tickets range in price from $25-$45. The curtain rises on Buika at 7:30pm. National Hispanic Cultural Center • Thu Mar 24 • 7:30-9:30pm • View on Alibi calendar
