Mid-Century Couch Wanted

Don Draper wants you to help me find a couch.
Don Draper wants you to help me find a couch.

I have my own office at the Alibi, and in exchange for this luxury I promised to fix the room up to look like a mid-century cocktail lounge where the writers could play Mad Men. Months later I’ve yet to decorate or furnish it, and sitting options include two silly exercise balls. Now I’m getting serious about fulfilling my promise. So, the question is: Where do you buy your furniture in Albuquerque? Any hot tips on ‘60s couches?

  • You don't buy your furniture in Albuquerque  [ Wed Apr 14 2010 3:10 PM ]

You drive to IKEA in Tempe. Duh. :)

  • IKEA  [ Wed Apr 14 2010 3:29 PM ]

I might buy curtains and glasses and rugs and packages of 1,000 tea lights from IKEA, but I will not buy IKEA's furniture.

  • Fuck IKEA.  [ Wed Apr 14 2010 3:49 PM ]

    It's the worst.

However, there is an awesome consignment store in the Mountain Run shopping center on Eubank and...Juan Tabo? I think. The furniture there is awesome and I've found many great mid century items there.

  • Is it cool  [ Wed Apr 14 2010 4:17 PM ]

to hate that place now? Why the beef? Obviously if you're paying $50 for an entertainment stand and $20 for a coffee table, it's not going to last your entire life, but why should it? If you make enough money to outfit your entire home with Pier 1, more power to you.

  • Pier 1 is crap  [ Wed Apr 14 2010 4:20 PM ]

But you're spot on with IKEA; you get what you pay for. It's super fun, just not the best quality. It's like a hip Target.

  • Target  [ Wed Apr 14 2010 4:31 PM ]

is already hip. Its clientele are those who "wouldn't be caught DEAD in a Walmart!", even though they typically utilize the same shady business practices.

Jessica, you can always find some neat stuff on Craigslist as they have a furniture section in the classifieds. People remodeling get rid of stuff for dirt cheap all the time that might be up your alley. It's worth a perusing every now and again.

  • The best guy for Mid-Century  [ Wed Apr 14 2010 4:39 PM ]

is Larry in Nob Hill. He has a shop that's right next to Morningside Antiques, and he's only open on Saturdays from 11 am until 3 or 4. And by appointment.

He has a shop on Ebay, too. But the prices in his store are significantly less, because people in Albuquerque won't buy anything unless it's cheap.

  • Two Things  [ Wed Apr 14 2010 5:00 PM ]

One... That furniture store next to Morningside Antiques is fucking awesome. He only fills his space with things that are worth it. No digging.

Two... Pier One and IKEA are now the same company. Pier One still sucks tit.

Classic Century Square Antiques on Central near the Highland... third floor!

  • Oh man  [ Wed Apr 14 2010 5:12 PM ]

Luka's Funky Stuff was awesome a few years ago. Now it's hardly ever open -- I finally managed to get up there about a month ago, and it was almost completely empty, except for some of the arcade games. No more furniture.

And if you're going to be in the business of vintage/retro home furnishings and midcentury kitsch, you should probably try to hide your weird religious disapproval of gay people. Sort of a no-brainer. Those are most of your customers.

  • Wha?  [ Wed Apr 14 2010 5:21 PM ]

  • I hate to say it  [ Wed Apr 14 2010 5:21 PM ]

But you can get some non-smelly (there's no guarantee with old upholstery) midcentury style couches for from Crate and Barrel. And if you buy it from a store (as opposed to online) and have it shipped, you don't have to pay sales tax. Some are under a grand.

  • McCHEESE!!  [ Wed Apr 14 2010 5:52 PM ]

    You've figured out my secret!

I've learned from ordering furniture from stores in cities where I only live temporarily, to have shipped to my primary residence, that it is the best way to go about it. Here are the reasons why... If it's a store where their prices are prohibitive to most shoppers (over $600 per item), they are usually DYING - JUST DYING to make their day, sales wise. They waive all shipping fees (because their corporate office pays that bill - not the store - what the fuck do they care) and all items shipped to beautiful NM pay no sales tax. Also if you throw down some charm they are usually willing to dig up some sale price from a few months ago to sweeten the deal, combine that with the discount for using a store credit card (usually no payment, no finance - GET IT PAID ON TIME) and you are getting away with a screaming deal.

I've also cultivated relationships with some of these sales associates where I can place an order over the phone. I'd be ballsy to call and ask for that deal if you don't know them but why not try? I mean you're getting free shipping, no sales tax, and hopefully some discounts. WHY ORDER ONLINE??

  • Couches, smouches  [ Wed Apr 14 2010 8:32 PM ]

Just keep the ice cold and have plenty of smokes on hand, gorgeous.

  • is it still called Luka's Funky Stuff?  [ Thu Apr 15 2010 11:23 AM ]

because I'm pretty sure the eccentric lady that used to run it doesn't run it anymore.

But, yes, when she ran it there was some totally kick ass 60's shit in there.

  • They separated  [ Thu Apr 15 2010 11:24 AM ]

It's just the hubby now. Or, ex-hubby, I guess.

  • Y'all are going to love this...  [ Thu Apr 15 2010 1:00 PM ]

I'm pretty sure a set dresser from some film production cleaned them out like a year or two ago and they weren't able to restock much more funky stuff.
