An interview with the director of training at APD

In addition to our coverage of the citizen-formed copwatch group and police oversight, the Alibi also spoke with the lieutenant who directs training at the police academy about officer-involved shootings.

On Tuesday morning, the Albuquerque Police Department fired its guns for the 11th time this year down the street from our Downtown office. The man who was shot is in stable condition at UNMH and is said to have been armed with a serrated butter knife.

If you charge at an officer with anything that even RESEMBLES something that could be used as a weapon (even a fucking toothpick for all I care), you deserve the death certificate you just wrote yourself. Duh. This is common sense, not a tale of too-violent police or training discrepancies.

I like how they're that specific. Not just any butter knife, but a serrated one. (Which, as you know, is 2.7% more likely to be able to cut you.)

Let me show you just how much serious damage I can do to you, and how fast I can do it, w some inocuous household items, or the stuff you are still allowed to carry on an aircraft ...

Though I've only lived in the ABQ/Rio Rancho area for a little over a year, the police here certainly appear more trigger happy than other PDs in comparable sized cities. Deadly force is used waaaaaaay to often!!!! Send those officers out to the shooting range to perfect their disarming shots or have them use rubber bullets. There are times deadly force is required but not always, especially in situations where people are not really responsible for their actions.

  • Sacrebleu!  [ Sat Oct 2 2010 9:27 AM ]

Always amazes me how people who have never been in a deadly force situation and/or have never had any training in the use of force are always so expert in it's application.

APD has shot more people than "usual" this year. Those cops are innocent of any wrongdoing until proven otherwise. The police certainly do a better job of policing their own than the doctors, lawyers, politicians, and journalists do!
