The former Albuquerque Police Department officer was put on paid administrative leave after his wife’s death for about a year and a half. During that time, he was paid $72,000, according to APD spokesperson Trish Hoffman. Then he was transferred to the Animal Welfare Department where he worked until today. During that time, he made about $83,500, Hoffman says.
In sum, since his wife’s death, taxpayers have paid Chavez about $155,000 in salary.
