  • Cancer + Fructose: This is no smoking gun  [ Mon Aug 9 2010 9:51 AM ]

  • Sugar in general and cancer  [ Mon Aug 9 2010 10:57 AM ]

So the study shows that sugar in general (fructose or glucose) fuels pancreatic cancer cells. (does not cause cancer, rather the cancer cells will eat it when in a test tube)

From what I've read recently (and maybe I need to read more?) High Fructose Corn syrup has not proven to be any worse for humans than other forms of sugar. That being said, too much sugar in any form is bad for us.

  • Fruc You!  [ Mon Aug 9 2010 1:23 PM ]

There goes the apple a day... 70% of the sugars in an apple are fructose!

Hey, not a word about Nagasaki!?

Considering more than 200,000 Japanese were killed during the invasion of Okinawa, including about a quarter of the civilian population, Hiroshima and Nagasaki were less costly to the Japanese than an American invasion of the mainland would have been.

No nukes is nutz! Nukes are the biggest reason we have not had WWIII and WWIV by now. OTOH, MAD (mutual assured destruction) was a deterent to the "godless commies". The Muslim fanatics might welcome a nuclear Jihad to hurry the Mahdi on his way...

says the cells dug fructose more than glucose.

    Interview these two asap please.

  • Interpretation of headlines  [ Tue Aug 10 2010 12:02 PM ]

I don't think anyone was suggesting Marisa isn't stating it correctly when she writes that cancer cells really dig fructose. But I think perhaps Freedumb was wanting to point out to the public (re scare tactic headlines from media outlets, in this case Reuters) that this does not mean fructose causes pancreatic cancer, or that glucose doesn't also feed pancreatic cancer.

The Reuters article gives no conclusive evidence that fructose is worse than glucose or other sugars. It's something to investigate more for sure, but it could also be a bunch of hype as far as the effects one sugar has on the body over another.

One must not take headlines at face value. Research what is behind the headlines. (I'm not suggesting that Alibi writers are saying headlines are God's word either, they know their investigative journalism)

  • Fructose hasn't been proven to cause cancer  [ Tue Aug 10 2010 3:09 PM ]

But the cancer cells derive more energy from fructose than glucose.

From the doc in that Reuters article:

"These findings show that cancer cells can readily metabolize fructose to increase proliferation," Dr. Anthony Heaney of UCLA's Jonsson Cancer Center and colleagues wrote.

"They have major significance for cancer patients given dietary refined fructose consumption, and indicate that efforts to reduce refined fructose intake or inhibit fructose-mediated actions may disrupt cancer growth."

Buncha corn farmers around here or what? (j/k)

  • I'm a skeptic  [ Tue Aug 10 2010 3:54 PM ]

I wanted to read the study for myself (you have to pay to see the actual study). I'm just always skeptical. Especially when I see this at the bottom of the article.

Now the team hopes to develop a drug that might stop tumor cells from making use of fructose

    ie $$$

Shit- the pharmaceutical companies are probably in cahoots with the HFCS manufacturers.

  • Go to Ted.com  [ Wed Aug 11 2010 4:40 PM ]

About a month ago I watched a talk on Ted.com about a new study that will try to cure cancer through diet. The premise is to deprive the cancer cells of the nutrients it needs to survive. It was a very interesting talk as most Ted.com talks are.

Speaking of which, Ted.com is coming to Albuquerque in September or October I think. The conference is going to be held at the Hard Rock Casino. I know I'm going to be there.

    Yay Education!

  • Ignite  [ Wed Aug 11 2010 4:58 PM ]

And speaking of Ted.com, last month I went to a "conference" called Ignite. It's basically like Ted.com where people talk about ideas, give lessons, and share hobbies that they're passionate about. Ignite ran less smoothly than a Ted.com conference, but the talks were only 5 minutes long each and were still intriguing and entertaining. The things I learned about at Ignite ranged from how to tell quality turquoise apart from bad turquoise to the local bee keeper population to where to find a good date in Albuquerque.

The event was held at CNM's Smith Brasher Hall. During intermission they gave away free pizza, cookies and soda. The best part: attendance to the conference itself was also free. There's supposed to be another ignite event in a few months so keep an eye out.

  • If cancer didn't eat what we eat..  [ Wed Aug 11 2010 5:14 PM ]

..then we'd have a cure by now.

"I've got cancer, eh? Well, no more mercury for you, Mr. Cancer cell!" he said, shoving the mercury sprinkler back away from his plate. "Never knew why I ate that stuff anyway."

  • Duh!?  [ Thu Aug 12 2010 8:50 PM ]

What's good for cancer cells is good for you, and what's bad for cancer cells is probably bad for you too.

Wonder if they prefer Vitamin C to Vitamin D... can't avoid everything they like, nor should you.
