  • Guns R US?  [ Thu Aug 23 2012 11:07 AM ]

"Getting a gun should be easy for good people and impossible for bad people. The only trick is telling the difference."

Not that simple; more to it than that. Even if they are good people when they buy it, how do you know if they are gonna stay good people?

With so many guns in the US, it's inevitable some are going to end up in the wrongs hands even if they start out in the right hands.

What price do we pay for the right to keep and bear arms for self defense and securing a free state? About 9,000 homicides and 18,000 suicides a year. How crazy is that?

Fewer guns wouldn't mean fewer suicides, just fewer by gun.

Of the 9000 homicides, about 700 are justified killings by cops and citizens in self defense. The rest are crooks killing crooks and innocent victims, and good guys gone bad killing innocent victims.

Is the self defense and recreational benefit worth the risk to life and limb? The character, judgement, training, experience, and regulation of gun owners can minimize the risk of gun ownership to individuals and society, but not eliminate it. How much risk are we willing to accept?

If guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns? That is pretty much the case in gun controlled Mexico, and it's a mess. OTOH, the UK is looking pretty good. Only outlaws have guns (or as close as you're gonna get) and they are still 3 times less likely to be killed, 45 times less likely to be killed by anybody w a gun.

The violent crime rate in the UK is 4 times higher than the USA. They have more violent crime, but less of it is fatal. We have less violent crime, but more of it is fatal. They have one gun for every 30 people, we have a gun for everybody.

Then you have the anomaly of El Paso in gun crazy Texas. You are safer in El Paso than you are in London, Dublin, Belfast, and Edinborough, not to mention Amsterdam, Lisbon, Vienna, Rome and Athens. Why can't the rest of gun crazy America be as safe as El Paso?

What's the future look like? Gun crime is declining. Our culture is changing. As the number of guns has gone up, the number of households w guns has declined. The Supreme Court has said reasonable restrictions are OK, but some restrictions are off the table. That could change w a change in the court. Until then, keep your powder dry, watch your six, and practice duck and cover.
