Primos Art Show: 'Un Viejo Nuevo' and 'El Resolanero' reception

Many historians pinpoint the birthplace of the Chicano movement as mid-‘60s New Mexico. On Friday, Sept. 14, Downtown gallery El Chante: Casa de Cultura hosts a celebration of two emissaries from that turbulent time. Padre Luis Jaramillo served the Catholic Church for 50 years and was active in the Black Berets’ civil rights work. He’ll display a series of his digital art, alongside a collection of woodcarvings and photo collages by historian and educator Tomás Atencio. Atencio is perhaps best known as a co-founder of La Academia de la Nueva Raza, a gathering space that was a kind of Chicano think tank where radical new philosophies were discussed and community history recorded. That same spirit is likely to infuse the show at El Chante. Show up between 6 and 8 p.m. and show some respect for our elders.
