'Hear It With Our Eyes'

Poesía de México

NHCCNM.ORG

Octavio Paz is credited with inciting a poetic outpouring in Mexico in the middle of the last century. That explosion of work steeped in Mexican culture continues to this day. "To read a poem is to hear it with our eyes; to hear it is to see it with our ears," Paz wrote in the essay "Recapitulations." Tonight, Teatro Paraguas will bring these synesthetic concepts to life during "Poesía de México," a selection of poems performed by actors in Albuquerque all weekend. Tickets to the shows are free and available an hour before showtime at the National Hispanic Cultural Center's box office. Expect to see music, costumes, props and projections in the performance, which will be presented in three languages: Nuahuatl, Spanish and English. The tribute will close with Javier Sicilia's "Estamos hasta la madre," the last piece he wrote before vowing to never pen another work in 2011. The poem is a tribute to his 24-year-old son Juan Francisco, who was killed in Mexico as a result of the drug cartels' stranglehold on the country.
