Speaking of Last-Minute Gifts...

"Strike" by Emily Timberlake
"Strike" by Emily Timberlake

Have you been to Corrales Bosque Gallery? It's a co-operative. And not like La Montanita. (Hey, hey. Take it easy. I'm a member. Nob Hill branch.) But a true co-op. Each of the 20 belonging artists pays an annual membership fee and commits about seven hours of gallery supervision per month. By virtue of this structure, there is no one on payroll; the artists run the shop, manage the space, keep the books, handle the publicity, conceive and create the product. Just as they have for the last decade and a half. And all while they fundraise for the community, whether to sponsor the teen artist series at Corrales Public Library or to support the mission of Road Runner food bank.

Around this time of year, gallery members--some of whom are quite well known beyond the bounds of our fair state--design and produce ornaments. Beautiful ornaments. At beautiful prices (starting around $15). In addition, the current "Holiday Peace" show features a wide array of other work, from stocking-stuffer-sized paintings to re-decorate-the-living-room-around-me sculptures. Somewhere in between is the work of Emily Timberlake, a water media artist who moved to Albuquerque from New York 18 months ago so she could "see the sky," applied to Corrales Bosque for the community she's always sought, and evolves as an artist on a daily basis because of the "incredible talents" of her co-op colleagues. If that narrative doesn't motivate you to go to the gallery, the promise of seeing Timberlake's mixed media on paper should. Especially because you'll have the privilege of seeing 19 other artists' projects at the same time.

There are plenty of hours before the last menorah light is lit, even more before the wrapped bundles o' joy need to go under the tree. So forget Amazon and go New Mexico. Really. GO!

Corrales Bosque Gallery is located in Mercado de Maya at 4685 Corrales Rd.
