Documentaries

While I saw a few terrific documentaries this year, none matched the everyday obscurity of "Helvetica," an 80 minute film about the common typeface...helvetica, by Gary Hustwit. Every aspect of the film--from the music, to the story's progression, to the balance of actuality and continuity--is pieced together with great care and meticulousness, resulting in an elegant, thorough and fascinating story about global visual culture.

Viewers of "Helvetica" might even find themselves feeling more elegant and fascinating. But that's probably just the Capri luxury lengths and chilled Carlo Rossi you drank while watching it. Or at least it was for me. Bonus points for spilling on yourself. Wait, what were we talking about?
