Why is this year such a big year for Defined Fitness?
This year marks our 25th Anniversary of helping keep our local communities fit. Defined Fitness opened its doors in 1988 and quickly grew from one small club to five large clubs in the Albuquerque, Rio Rancho and Farmington, New Mexico areas. As the premier no-contract health club, we became the industry leader by offering state-of-the-art strength training, cardiovascular equipment, a wide variety of group fitness classes and cutting edge athletic programming. Of course the support of our loyal members and the community has also been a big part of shaping who we are today.
What was one of your best business decisions?
It was deciding to earn our members’ business every month by offering no-contract, month-to-month memberships. When Defined Fitness was established, the health club industry was a lot different than it is today. Joining a health club meant having to commit to a lengthy contract with expensive monthly dues. The emphasis was not so much about selling health and fitness as it was selling contracts. Some were even selling lifetime memberships! Instead, Defined Fitness created a business model focused on offering top-notch facilities and training programs at an affordable rate that kept members coming back each month. This set Defined Fitness apart from the rest.
How do you keep your members motivated?
Many people find motivation by working out in a group setting. Our group fitness classes provide a positive, supportive atmosphere that makes exercise fun. We offer a variety of exciting classes, including Zumba, BodyPump, BodyCombat, BodyJam, Cycling, Aqua Fitness and Yoga ... just to name a few. We pride ourselves on staying up on the latest trends, hiring the best instructors and offering classes that are enjoyable for all fitness levels. Each of our clubs offer between 80 to 130 classes every week (varies by location).
Do you offer Personal Training?
Yes. Our Personal Training Department is top-notch. All of our personal trainers must meet specific educational and certification standards, and it is imperative that they have a strong passion for what they do. Working with a personal trainer provides a variety of benefits that help you maximize your workout efforts. In addition to motivation, a personal trainer provides you with information on the best exercises to achieve specific fitness goals, proper technique to avoid injury, and nutrition information to help fuel workouts, build muscle and lose weight. We offer all of our members one free consultation with a personal trainer to help them assess their current physical situation, answer any questions they might have and help them design a program to reach their goals.
What kind of specialized programming do you offer?
We offer the nationally renowned Parisi Speed School at our Juan Tabo club location. This school offers the ultimate in speed training for children and adults with a focus on power, strength, flexibility and endurance. Touted by NFL players and UFC fighters alike, the Parisi Speed School combines everything from plyometrics, speed work, strength training and more. It is excellent training for any sport and for those just wanting to improve their athletic ability. We also offer popular suspension training at our San Mateo club.
What gives you a competitive edge?
The value you receive for your membership is unbeatable. For one low monthly rate, our memberships include access to all of our club locations, group exercise classes, free supervised child care, an aquatics complex (indoor pool, steam room, sauna and hot tub), and state-of-the-art cardiovascular and strength training equipment. Many of our competitors do not offer all of these amenities, or they charge extra for them.
What will inspire you for the next 25 years?
We look forward to continuing helping our community achieve their fitness goals and lead healthier lifestyles for years to come.
