How did you get started in this business?
Camp Shaver began in 1945 to introduce the wonders of the outdoors to kids. A lot of kids in today's world fall victim to sitting behind a computer or video games and never get the chance to experience what mother nature has to offer. This is where Camp Shaver comes in. It will give your children the chance to get out and go hiking, swimming, and camping. Not to mention the great physical exercise!
Why did you choose this business?
Camp Shaver has a mission to nurture the potential of children and to promote healthy living. Hosting this camp every month allows us to help kids grow from as early as 7 years old and, for some, by the time they leave they’ll have grown into the leaders of tomorrow.
What is your business philosophy?
To provide the youth of today a safe, fun and awe-inspiring setting to develop self-esteem and personal character, learn teamwork and a sense of community in a setting of appreciation and respect for the environment.
What is your or your company's greatest asset?
Our greatest asset is our staff, who are developed in our teen development programs. This includes our Leadership in Training program and our Counselor in Training Program.
Why did you choose to do business in Albuquerque?
The YMCA, as a whole, wants to be available to all communities and Camp Shaver is the same.
What motivates you to succeed besides the desire to make money?
Camp Shaver makes it a point to focus on our mission and not the metrics. Money never comes first, the growth and development of our campers does.
What significant changes have you implemented recently?
We are currently in the midst of our capital campaign. During this campaign, we will raise enough money to renovate Camp Shaver, giving campers overall better experience through improved program supplies, buildings and landscape.
What successes in the past year are you most proud of accomplishing?
Camp Shaver increased its board size with active and energetic new members who are helping to raise money and create programs that will improve the future of camp.
What do you offer that the competition doesn't?
There is no other resident camp like us. We offer a traditional resident camp that will build and grow along with your child. Something that makes us different than any other camp in the state.
How do you maintain your competitive edge?
Improving our programs is a never-ending process. We want to make sure that our campers get the most out of their experience and will continue to come back each summer.
What are your growth goals?
Our growth goals are to improve our programs each year, which in turn will help us improve our numbers from the previous years.
What contributions to the community (charitable or otherwise) are you most proud of?
Exposing kids to nature and camping out under the stars. It gives them a new sense of appreciation for the world around them.
In what area of your business do you invest the most energy?
Youth Development.
What's your favorite saying or quotation?
"It's not what happens in life, it's how you react to it."
Do you have a hero or mentorbusiness or otherwise?
Our main mentor business is the YMCA of the USA but we also turn to other successful YMCA camps for networking and brainstorming.
What do you look for in prospective employees?
We look for a caring, compassionate, smart individual who wants to teach and develop children into young adultssomeone who is open-minded, willing to learn and wants to have fun!
What inspires you?
Watching our kids grow up and become mature, successful adults.
What are you doing in the off season?
We are sending out brochures to prospective campers and we are also in the midst of building a brand new website, www.campshaver.org, due to launch March 1st.
Can parents participate in Camp Shaver?
Yes you can! On Memorial and Labor Day weekends parent can rent out a cabin for their families and get a chance to experience Camp Shaver with their kids!
Is Camp Shaver only open to participants?
No. Camp Shaver is open to anyone who would like to come enjoy a nice, relaxing and fun weekend. We are available for weddings, group retreats and family reunions.
