New Mexican Kennels was established in 1951, making it the oldest boarding facility in the state of New Mexico. Sixty-three years ago, while on a trip to the United States from Salzburg, Austria, Kiku and Vernon Kennedy arrived in New Mexico for a short visit. As they drove over La Bajada Hill into Albuquerque, they were captivated by the area and decided to call New Mexico home.

Upon arrival they established the kennel and built their home on the hilltop, where it still stands today. In 1970 the business was passed down to their daughter and son-in-law. Through the family's efforts, the kennel expanded and remains the oldest and perhaps most respected pet boarding facilities in New Mexico.

Catering to dogs, cats, birds, pigs and some reptiles, the kennel provides a climate-controlled indoor suite with an outdoor veranda for every pampered canine, while our feline friends lounge in a separate cattery, replete with condo-style accommodations. A 3,000-square-foot exercise area known as Pavlov’s Garden, individual playtime sessions and late-night bed checks for all lodgers are just a few reasons pet owners choose New Mexican Kennels.

Other services include a full service Grooming Salon, where a standard grooming includes a bath, brush out, blow dry, toe nail trim, ear cleaning and anal gland expression. Breed-specific haircuts may be added upon request. Our newly revamped Retail Store features super-premium pet foods, toys, treats, supplements, collars, leashes and a variety of other pet-related products. A convenient pick-up and delivery service for boarding, trips to the veterinarian or delivery of retail products is available from our safe, secure shuttle bus.

We are open seven days a week and encourage you to visit us for a tour or to check out our newly stocked retail section. After all we are “a hotel so unique we don’t accept people.”
