Fresh, Local, Modern … CoolWater Fusion Restaurant Caters to Weddings, Civil Unions and Special Occasions!—By Seth Mossman
Nestled away in the Northeast Heights, CoolWater Fusion Restaurant has established itself as a local mainstay that incorporates a “fusion” of several cuisines and cooking techniques. CoolWater’s flair for great food is accompanied by an atmosphere that has enticingly evolved along with their menu over the last few years.

Earlier this year, chef and owner Glenn Williams-Mier implemented several renovations to revitalize the restaurant’s bar. With the completion of these renovations, the new bar has earned the title of “tallest wine bar in Albuquerque.”

Williams-Mier wanted something that would set their place apart from other local hot spots. He did just that with a smooth, ice-blue LED-lit bar that glows nightly at CoolWater, creating a mellow atmosphere that sparks conversation throughout the intimate dining room. The bar’s top was designed by artists Nick Harmon, Antonio Garcia and JP Rodman, and is constructed with an internal lighting system that alternates in shine and color. The multi-colored top is also designed to respond with changes in color as the lighting shifts.

But Williams-Mier is not finished there. Through early October, the restaurant will complete further renovations, including a 14-foot backsplash in the bar offering an abundant assortment of carefully chosen wine selections. This addition will undoubtedly spark patrons’ interests well beyond the restaurant’s reputation for great fare. Set beneath the second floor stage—which is often occupied by local musicians such as Oscar Butler, Shane Wallin and Matt Jones performing live—CoolWater’s unique bar is always a fun destination for social gatherings and merry nightlife. Chef Williams-Mier eagerly anticipates the bar’s final completion and openly welcomes all to experience it during happy hour, Monday through Saturday from 4-6pm for half-priced appetizers, beer and wine. Happy hour can also be enjoyed, weather permitting, on the restaurant’s patio which enjoys incredible views of the Sandia Mountains. With $2.50 domestics and drafts and appetizers starting at $3.50, CoolWater’s happy hour is one of the best in the city.

Accompanying CoolWater’s new bar setting, they now also offer over 20 wine selections by the glass, over 40 by the bottle and 25 beer selections, including their own house brew—CoolWater’s Agua Fria Blonde. This beer is relatively new on the list and is a medium-bodied, gold-colored brew with a mild hop crispness and subtle fruitiness. Uniquely its own, CW’s signature beer has become a popular and proud choice.

CoolWater is nearing its fourth year of operation in Albuquerque … which speaks loudly in itself of their success. Chef Williams-Mier attributes much of this success to a keen and attentive focus on passion and innovation. Additionally, as a small business, CoolWater is able to entertain and feature new specials and menu options on a daily basis. Williams-Mier says, “We have a fun and loyal following. It is very rare for us to not see newcomers return. Our customers love our attention to detail, ever-growing focus on creativity and innovation and our commitment to community and local support.” With a new assistant chef, who was previously executive chef at Marcello’s Chophouse, Williams-Mier also expresses an enthusiastic anticipation for the upcoming holiday season. A recognized advocate and partner with numerous local small businesses like his own, chef Williams-Mier believes firmly in the economic effects and importance of supporting local small business, evident in CoolWater’s use of locally grown produce and New Mexico products. This includes bread made fresh daily at the nearby Le Paris Bakery in Northeast Albuquerque and several local farmers—often selling at local farmers’ markets. “Buying and utilizing local businesses and farmers is beneficial to us all! It helps us serve better and fresher dishes while aiding in a sustainable community,” says Williams-Mier—who also pairs up with other local business owners, like Uptown Sports Bar and ABQ Brew Pub owners, Adam and Denise Krafft, to encourage and promote this type of communal effort.

CoolWater has also become an ideal setting for private events. As the restaurant comfortably seats up to 70 inside, with additional room for 30 guests on the patio, Williams-Mier often accommodates private parties with the option of a customized menu. Be it a wedding reception, rehearsal dinner or other celebration, CoolWater’s services, offerings and amenities are some of the best in Albuquerque. The owners love to host special occasions such as civil unions, now legally recognized by the city of Albuquerque. They will rent their restaurant at a very reasonable rate compared to other event buildings and with a much more contemporary décor and feel.

All of these attributes coupled with the newly evoked charm of their bar, general ambience and commitment to quality, have deservingly earned CoolWater Fusion Restaurant its notable and well-respected reputation. CoolWater is located southeast of Kelly’s Liquors in the Wyoming Mall, a half-block South of Wyoming and Menaul.
