Why did you choose this business?
Our family has a long tradition of candy-making, spanning three generations, and we were hoping to carry on this tradition. We discovered an opportunity in Nob Hill, and we felt there was a need for this type of business in that community. Our shop is truly unique to the neighborhood.
What is your business philosophy?
Treat everyone you meet with kindness and consideration. This breeds a happy staff, which leads to happy customers and a happy planet.
What is your educational background?
I attended high school in Hereford, Texas, and received a liberal arts degree from Trinity University, in San Antonio, Texas.
What is your or your company's greatest asset?
Our staff. Our talented team brings tons of positive energy to the table every day.
What are your strongest business traits?
Our ability to treat people like people, and not customers. There is no need for that barrier. We’re all in this together.
Why did you choose to do business in Albuquerque?
I am a transplant from Texas. I came out here to spend a couple of years skiing and eating chile. Twenty-six years later, I’m still here. I love the people. I love the pace of life. I love the weather. I love Albuquerque, and I couldn't imagine doing this anywhere else.
What motivates you to succeed besides the desire to make money?
We want to help develop a sense of community, not only in Nob Hill, but in Albuquerque in general. We are constantly looking for ways to give back to the community, whether through our work with Joy Junction and the Road Runner Food Bank, or our support for the UNM programs.
How is operating your own business different than you expected?
It isn't. My goal has always been to integrate my personal and work lives. My girlfriend and daughter spend a great deal of time in the store, so we’re together as a family while working. That makes work a fun family activity as well as a livelihood.
How do you maintain your competitive edge?
We stay sharp by focusing on the love we put into our product and the love we put into our service. Everything else just seems to work itself out.
What was your best business decision?
The people I have surrounded myself with. My partner is a longtime friend and a truly awesome man. He’s a pretty good drummer, too. I have the best staff that money can buy. You can call it a business decision if you like or just plain luck. Either way, I’m extremely fortunate to have this group on board.
What words of wisdom would you offer to someone starting their own business?
Do something you love!
What's your favorite saying or quotation?
If you don't eat at the Chocolate Dude, then we both go hungry.
Three passions outside of work?
My family, my music (I play in a band) and cooking something other than chocolate.
