Weekly Business Profile
Retro Revolution ABQ
Type of business:
Vintage Lifestyle Specialty Shop
912 Broadway Blvd NE
Albuquerque NM 87102
Why did you choose this business?
I created Retro Revolution ABQ because I wanted to bring the authentic style and comfort of a bygone era to others to experience, enjoy and love as much as I do. It's great to watch someone who had these items growing up able to see and use them all over again. It's also wonderful helping a younger generation of people experience retro goods for the first time. These pieces are timeless, functional, unique and crafted to last.
What are your growth goals?
My greatest challenge has been helping people find the store. The shop is tucked away off north Broadway, just north of EDO. It's Downtown and at the edge of Martineztown. There are so many hidden gems in this neighborhood still waiting to be discovered.
Can mid-century modern decor be integrated into any home?
Absolutely. Vintage and mid-century decor is functional and works well in many settings, large or small. Whether you're redecorating an entire house or office, or you're simply adding art or a chair and lamp for reading, you can't go wrong. It's a sleek, timeless style that mixes well in any location.
What is your or your company's greatest asset?
It's along the same lines as my business philosophy: authentic, affordable mid-century gems that fit any budget. I'm committed to finding comfortable and stylish furniture for my clients, along with accessories that accentuate their lifestyle.
What is your business philosophy?
I want to provide a variety of genuine vintage pieces at an affordable price. As a younger collector, I sometimes found myself with a limited funds shopping for mid-century pieces for my apartment. That's why today I love the idea of sharing amazing, funky pieces with people at a reasonable price. For me, it's not about making a buck. I sincerely want others who share an appreciation of vintage to enjoy it in their own homes without burdening their budgets.
How did you get started in this business?
I've always had a passion for the vintage lifestyle—furniture, design, cars, art, clothing, all of it. It started when I was a young girl. I'd go shopping for vintage clothes and very rarely, if ever, went to the mall. I liked the element of being unique and having something that others did not.
What words of wisdom would you offer to someone starting their own business?
Love what you do, and stay focused.
What are your strongest business traits?
Creativity, adaptability, focus, purpose and passion are very important. I try to always keep those ideas in mind while I'm running my business.
How is operating your own business different than you expected?
It is a lot of work but well worth it. I'm getting to live out my dream and share it with others.
How has the Internet affected your business and how do you think it might affect your business in the future?
I'm able to reach a wider audience through the Internet. People who may not live in Albuquerque are still able to view the website or Facebook page and see what's available. I think it makes comparison shopping easier and accessible for people, and that's always a good thing in my book. I want people to be informed about what they’re buying.
In what area of your business do you invest the most energy?
I spend a tremendous amount of my time and energy treasure hunting for hip, retro items. It is definitely the most fun part, though! Variety is important.
Why did you choose to do business in Albuquerque?
Albuquerque is my home. We're a city of open-minded, spunky, intelligent people ready for things that are exciting and out of the ordinary. How could I not choose Albuquerque? It's perfect.
If there is one thing about Albuquerque or New Mexico that you could change, what would it be?
I wish Albuquerque had a greater appreciation for preserving our historical buildings and markers. It's sad to see the old Route 66 motels gone along with the beautiful neon signs that used to once light the way for motorists.
If you had a chance to live anyone else's life, whose life would it be?
I’m completely satisfied with who I am and what I'm doing with my own life.
Three passions outside of work?
I love cruising around Downtown on my bicycle. It's so relaxing. I also love to shop and eat good, local food.
What's your favorite saying or quotation?
"Ideas won't work if you don't."
