What was your first job?
Taylor's Ice Cream Parlor. Loved it!
How did you get started in this business?
Laying in bed one day I was wondering why no one delivers breakfast burritos in this town since they are so popular. I then thought, well I could do that, and I set out to find a kitchen space.
Why did you choose this business?
It chose me, I believe.
What is your business philosophy?
Be philanthropic and go local always. Treat your employees just as good as your customers, and you will always have respect. And don't nickel and dime!
What is your educational background?
High school and college degrees = nada. That is why I sling burritos.
What is your or your company's greatest asset?
Our burritos! Our food and customer service, like most companies, are our pride and joy. We strive to always bring the best food and service to our customers, and we hope we meet the expectations consistently.
What are your strongest business traits?
We deliver. No one delivers in ABQ really!
Why did you choose to do business in Albuquerque?
Albuquerque is a unique market. It’s relatively still going through a revitalization. Its growth is steady and obvious within the last 10 years. However, it’s still small enough where the local community is strong here, and there are markets that still need tapping into. I believe I just took advantage of a certain niche that was waiting to be found.
What motivates you to succeed besides the desire to make money?
To establish a new business model. I think businesses who feel strong enough should care more for their community and work with people in need. Need can range from experiencing homelessness, domestic abuse, lack of education, drug abuse, etc. Door to Door Burritos is prepared out of the kitchen of Dawn Sanchez, and at our kitchen, we help women who are domestically abused or experiencing homelessness or just in need. If most companies opened their door to just one person in need, a lot would be accomplished for the better.
How is operating your own business different than you expected?
It’s just never simple. It seems so simple to sell burritos. But the devil is in the details with regard to owning your own business, whether it’s burritos or a large-scale company. I also never expected the exhaustion to rival the exhaustion of a mother with a newborn child and three young kids under the age of 5.
What significant changes have you implemented recently?
We will begin requiring only a minimum order of two burritos or more in the North Valley, Downtown or Jefferson professional area. For all other locations in Albuquerque, a five-burrito minimum is required.
What successes in the past year are you most proud of accomplishing?
Just building up this client base and making this company sustain itself. It’s been such a pleasure to get to know the clients. I don't see them every day anymore like I used to. But I am always the lady answering the phone, so I get to talk to everyone, which makes me smile.
What do you offer that the competition doesn't?
We deliver! We deliver with a smile and usually some good conversation. But we can also brag about our chile. Our green chile is made from scratch. Our red chile is as well and has dark chocolate added.
How do you maintain your competitive edge?
Best product and best customer service
How would you define your position within the marketplace or within your market segment?
We are so new! But we are offering a product that is far superior to what is out there.
What do you think is the biggest obstacle in operating a successful business?
Oh, who knows? I really haven't figured that out other than lack of money. But honestly, there are a lot of obstacles right now. You just have to treat each one as a temporary situation and forge through. If you dwell, it becomes overwhelming.
What was your best business decision?
To work with Dawn Sanchez and her team of women at her kitchen. Door to Door Burritos is completely supported by her larger local business that is a catering company. She exemplifies how to help this economy, and help foster change and growth.
What was your biggest missed opportunity?
I hope I haven't had one yet! I hope in five years I still have difficulty answering this question.
What are your growth goals?
Simple. Two new customers a week.
What is your company's greatest challenge?
Sustaining in this economy—just like everyone else.
What contributions to the community (charitable or otherwise) are you most proud of?
I donate all of our extra burritos to the Albuquerque Mission Center. We have donated 50 burritos to the 94 Rock Mayflower food drive, and also towards the TEDx convention. We really try and support our local community in every way we can. If I could do more, I would.
How has the Internet affected your business and how do you think it might affect your business in the future?
I think for everyone in general its accessibility, plain and simple.
In what area of your business do you invest the most energy?
The burrito-making and the customer service.
If you had to choose another career or start another business what would it be?
What words of wisdom would you offer to someone starting their own business?
Hold on to your bum.
What's your favorite saying or quotation?
Anything is possible.
If you had a chance to live anyone else's life, whose life would it be?
A 5-year-old. Bring me back to when it was simpler.

What do you look for in prospective employees?
Kindness and sincerity. All the rest we can work on.

Children. Those little smiles.

Travel and nature documentaries, and my Jersey family.
