What was your first job?
My very first job was delivering newspapers.
How did you get started in this business?
I have been a practicing artist for 32 years, and since the 2000s I had been thinking about starting a gallery specializing in contemporary artwork on, of, or with paper.
What is your business philosophy?
We want to provide the best possible venue to show and to educate the public about artwork on, of, or with paper.
What is your or your company's greatest asset?
The artists from both New Mexico and New England who, along with their artwork, are a critical aspect of the gallery.
What motivates you to succeed besides the desire to make money?
We are proud to promote the artwork of deserving artists in New Mexico and New England.
What successes in the past year are you most proud of accomplishing?
We started the business and have been sucessfully selling art.
What do you offer that the competition doesn't?
Leich Lathrop Gallery specializes in art on, of, or with paper. This sets us apart from other galleries.
How would you define your position within the marketplace or within your market segment?
Our specialty in paper-driven art defines us a unique niche gallery.
What are your growth goals?
We want to make the gallery a permanent fixture here in Albuquerque, and to eventually turn it into a nonprofit center for teaching the creation and display of art involving paper.
What is your company's greatest challenge?
Our challenge and our mission is to continue what we have started.
What contributions to the community (charitable or otherwise) are you most proud of?
We bring quality art and and a unique gallery to Albuquerque's Old Town. I also work on a subcommittee of Rio Rancho's Arts Commission.
In what area of your business do you invest the most energy?
If you had to choose another career or start another business, what would it be?
There is isn't anything I’d rather be doing.
What words of wisdom would you offer to someone starting their own business?
There is a quote from Elbert Hubbard, who started an arts and crafts movement in Upstate New York: "The biggest mistake you can make is to be afraid to make one."
What's your favorite saying or quotation?
“In these days, a man who says a thing cannot be done is quite apt to be interrupted by some idiot doing it.” Elbert Hubbard (1856 - 1915)
If you had a chance to live anyone else's life, whose life would it be?
Robert Motherwell.
Do you have a hero or mentor-business or otherwise?
In the art world I have many heroes - too many to mention here - including many of my contemporaries.
If there is one thing about Albuquerque or New Mexico that you could change, what would it be?
I wish we could have all of Albuquerque's art galleries in one central area so it would be easier for art patrons to visit them. Think Santa Fe's Canyon Road or Boston, MA's Harrison Ave.
What inspires you?
Good art, artists and the New Mexican landscape.
Three passions outside of work?
There are only two: making art and mountain biking.
Who are the artists you represent?
There are 10 artists from New Mexico: Aaron Bass, Eason Eige, Evey Jones, C.A. Klimek, Chuck Lathrop, Stephanie Lerma, Krittika Ramanujan, Carol Sanchez, Janet Yagoda Shagam and Harriette Tsosie. There are four New England artists as well: Laurie Alpert, Donna Dodson, Andy Moerlein and Stephanie Roberts-Camello.
What is your next show?
C.A. Klimek’s "Orogenesis," runs from Jan. 3 through Jan. 30. The Opening Reception is Jan. 4, from 5 to 7:30 p.m.
What are your hours?
Monday and Wednesday - Saturday: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Sunday: 12 p.m. - 5 p.m.. We are closed on Tuesdays.
