Visual artists who’ve been searching for a new medium should jump at the chance to decorate their very own bowling pin. Local attorney, author, artist and animal rescuer Ed Goodman has put out a call to artists who’d like to try their hand at something unique while helping to raise funds for Second Chance Animal Rescue and New Mexico Dogs Deserve Better. He’s offering one of 50 “funky, vintage, wooden, full-sized bowling pins,” as well as marble and wooden bases, for participating artists to transform into works of art with paint, textiles, found objects, clay, mosaics or anything else they can come up with. The pins will be sold at a future gala event, with all proceeds going to the critter-assistance organizations. In the past, Goodman organized a fundraiser for Watermelon Mountain Ranch where portraits of homeless dogs were sold at the annual Fur Bowl, so he’s hip to helping animals with art. Deadline for finished pieces is September 1, 2013. Contact Goodman at email@example.com to obtain your bowling pin.
Fiber artists needn’t get knotted up—there’s still time to apply for scholarships offered by the Albuquerque Fiber Arts Council. Three different scholarships are available, each with the goal of helping a New Mexico resident pursue their education in any fiber arts-related discipline. Applicants should be advanced students and have a plan for their course of study. Deadline: June 15, 2013. For more information, visit fiberartsfiesta.org and click on the “Education” tab.
Playwrights, it’s time to put the finishing touches on your masterpieces. You could get your work produced at the VSA North Fourth Art Center in July. Two Worlds Theater and Film is seeking full-length, previously unproduced plays by Native Americans that reflect “the duality of the contemporary American Indian experience.” Three promising authors will be personally mentored; one of the three top works will be chosen for a full production during the 2013-2014 Two Worlds festival. Deadline: May 26, 2013. The application is available at the festival website under “Events.”
