A discussion that seeks to help people understand the nature and scope of mental health concerns experienced by LGBTQ folk including trauma, depression, substance use problems and suicide.

LGBTQ folk face a wide range of challenges to mental health, including discrimination, stigma, trauma, and increased risk for several mental health and medical conditions.  This discussion, lead by Nathaniel Sharon, MD, and Brant Hager, MD, seeks to help you understand the nature and scope of mental health concerns experienced by LGBTQ folk, with particular emphasis on the impacts of trauma, depression, substance use problems, and suicide.  Nathaniel Sharon, MD, works as an assistant professor with the UNM department of psychiatry, where he focuses on educating medical students, residents, fellows, and national audiences on trans* health and HIV psychiatry, particularly in children and adolescents, and provides comprehensive clinical care to trans* folk across the state.  Brant Hager, MD, serves as an assistant professor with the UNM department of psychiatry, where he educates medical students, residents, and fellows, and where he works as the medical director for behavioral health at Truman Health Services, UNM's outpatient medical home for people living with HIV.
