Witness the unveiling of the latest masterpiece by trompe l’oeil muralist John Pugh on the south side of the Jean Cocteau in the Railyard.

He has been working on this giant piece for nearly a year, and it is almost ready to make its big debut. An opening reception with wine and light hors d’oeuvres will be held at Wheelhouse Art Gallery beginning at 5:30 p.m. John Pugh will unveil the mural at 6:05 p.m. sharp and talk about the new mural. After his brief talk, attendees will head back to the Jean Cocteau Cinema Gallery to view prints of his other murals and have cocktails at the bar. Pugh will explain the technical and conceptual processes of creating these large scale and highly detailed murals. In addition, there will be copies of Pugh’s monograph for sale at the Jean Cocteau Cinema bookstore.

Pugh is a trompe l’oeil artist focusing primarily on mural painting. Trompe l’oeil is defined as a visual illusion in art, especially as used to trick the eye into perceiving a painted detail as a three-dimensional object. He has found that the “language” of life-size illusions allows for communication with a very large audience. It seems almost universal that people take delight in being visually tricked. Once captivated by the illusion, the viewer is lured to cross an artistic threshold and thus seduced into exploring the concept of the piece.
