A fusion performance of jazz, World music, hip-hop and electronic elements with Afro-Cuban roots.

FlyerOutpost is pleased to welcome back 7-time GRAMMY-nominated pianist-composer-bandleader, Omar Sosa, and his Quarteto AfroCubano, who were last heard at the 2014 New Mexico Jazz Festival.  Touring in continuing support of their 2015 CD, ILE, which means home, or earth, in the Yoruba language of West Africa and on which Sosa returns to the Latin Jazz roots of his native Cuba, the band features Cuban drummer Raul Pineda; Cuban saxophonist Leandro Saint-Hill; and Mozambican electric bassist Childo Tomas.  One of the most versatile jazz artists on the scene today, Omar Sosa has forged a distinctive path in music, fusing an array of jazz, world music, hip-hop, and electronic elements with his AfroCuban roots. Born and raised in Camaguey, Cuba, he is a prolific composer and charismatic bandleader and has created a unique cosmopolitan voice "articulating a brilliant, joyous, and thoroughly contemporary global jazz idiom." Honored with a Smithsonian Associates lifetime achievement award in 2003 for his contribution to the development of Latin jazz in the United States, he has since received several commissions and released numerous recordings. "Sosa's music is the unifying sort, yoking together Africa and jazz and Latin America and hip-hop.  He makes it work, being one of those rare birds whose keyboard skills are near those of Chick Corea or Chucho Valdés." The New York Times.
