Santa Fe artist Ysidro Barela shares their simple statement conveyed via the equally simple yet powerful medium of embroidery on a quilt made of ace bandages. Runs through 11/18.
“need ya to know:”
An Artist’s Plea for Healing
At a time of unspeakable cruelty, bigotry, and fear- mongering, Santa Fe artist Ysidro Barela has a message for us: Love ya lots. It’s a simple statement conveyed via the equally simple – but, in this context, very powerful – medium of embroidery on a quilt made of ace bandages. The quilt covers the walls of the Art.i.factory, the art space inside of Art.i.fact consignment boutique.
View it and meet the artist at the opening reception on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 4 to 7 p.m.
• Exhibition dates: Sept. 23 – Nov. 18, 2017
• Location: the Art.i.factory gallery (inside Art.i.fact consignment boutique)
930 Baca St., Suite C, Santa Fe 87505
Barela, who holds a BFA from Santa Fe University of Art and Design, says the phrase “love ya lots” was selected because it is playful, friendly, and sincere. Ten friends helped the artist embroider the phrase repeatedly on the bandage quilt.
Textiles and art are intertwined for Barela, who works at Santa Fe Dry Goods, a high-end boutique that features a collection of international fashion designers. Indeed, the interplay between fabric, artistic expression, and fashion has proven to be fertile ground.
“I believe [bandages] represent a universal view of healing,” Barela says. “I think in the current climate of the world, this installation is a small space of comfort and healing.” As an installation, Barela’s “need ya to know” puts a different spin on the idea of healing, the power of love, and the need for a warm embrace.
