SHIFT | DANCE presents SHIFT DANCE | FESTIVAL 2017, the 2nd annual national contemporary dance festival in Albuquerque, NM. SHIFT | DANCE remains dedicated to presenting and producing local, national, and international artists. We are featuring a diverse line-up of national artists in three nights of main stage performances:
Thursday, October 19: S. Paola López R. (TX)
Friday, October 20: AGA Collaborative (NM/NC)
Saturday, October 21: SHIFT | DANCE + Erika Pujič (NY)
SHIFT | DANCE co-directors Jacqueline M. García, lisa nevada, and Kelsey Paschich will each present new works in the closing night of the festival, as well as perform in a newly commissioned work by Erika Pujič. We are thrilled to invite Pujič to share the stage with SHIFT in presenting her work Rendezvous in collaboration with composer Carl Landa.
With the 2nd annual contemporary dance festival, SHIFT | DANCE continues to drive the advancement of contemporary, exploratory and research-based dance in Albuquerque and the creation of a “movement” to elevate and generate awareness for the range of dance forms in our city.
Our invited guests for this year’s festival each present a unique choreographic voice and movement style to share with our local audiences.
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2017 – S. Paola López R. (El Paso, TX)
El Paso based artist, S. Paola López R., will present transfronteriza,a collectively created performance where one body embodies movements, sounds, stories and histories carried and led by women of the US/Mexico border. As part of a broader project by the same name, transfronteriza has been created with
women, men and gender nonconforming people from El Paso, TX and Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua as young as 7 and as old as 70, and in spaces as varied as university classrooms, museums, women’s shelters, street art festivals, community centers, public libraries and high schools. Embodied and led by dancemaker and performance activist S. Paola López R., this solo piece will share (a glimpse of) the beauty and complexity of the lives, dreams, and challenges of women from and living on the border.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2017 – AGA Collaborative (NM/NC)
AGA Collaborative - Gretchen Alterowitz, Alison Bory, and Amanda Hamp - will present win. place. show. a recent work that investigates a set of interrelated themes: the pressures of accomplishment and achievement, the demands of perpetual productivity, and the many ways of "being" in the daily race. Working with cultural markers of competition (track suits, trophies, winners' podiums), the piece reveals structures that shape our expectations and experiences. Formed in 2011 by the three dance artists, AGA Collaborative was created as a space to reflect and sweat through ideas. The company digs into questions about the experience of being alive in this moment, “We wrestle with making collectively, and what that can do in the world. We show up. We work. We work with presence. We move. We remember. We wonder. We are all in this together.”
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2017 – SHIFT | DANCE (Albuquerque, NM) and ERIKA PUJIČ (NY)
SHIFT | DANCE has proudly commissioned a new work by New York based guest artist, Erika Pujič with an original composition by composer, Carl Landa. Pujič has created Transverse Syndrome a new trio for SHIFT co-directors, which will premiere on the closing night of the festival. Transverse Syndrome explores the statuesque images of intersecting lines and the physicality of diverse individuals moving through space. Conceived for Jacqueline García, lisa nevada and Kelsey Pascich, these three unique movers exist in a space that embody both symmetry and imbalance. The music and the choreography were created simultaneously in the studio to cultivate a symbiotic journey.
Pujič and Landa will also present Rendezvous, a marriage of dance, live music and film that was premiered at The Bates Dance Festival in 2015. Long time collaborators Erika Pujič and Carl Landa joined forces with filmmakers John Schneider and Steven Tainsh to combine the different artistic mediums to create a cohesive experience.
