One of the most celebrated, thoughtful and prominent jazz acts of the last 20 years perform live on their final tour.
One of the most celebrated, thoughtful, and prominent jazz acts of the last twenty years, The Bad Plus— originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota and now based in New York City— came together at the end of the 20th century and has avoided easy categorization ever since. They have won critical acclaim and fans worldwide with their creativity, unique sound and flair for live performance. A group of passionate collaborators with no single “leader,” they have broken down the walls of jazz convention and created a unique and uncompromising body of work, the bulk of which has been original. The Bad Plus have also been widely recognized for their deconstruction of songs from the pop, rock, country, and classical music idioms which they return to for their 2017 album, It’s Hard. The Bad Plus features bassist, Reid Anderson; drummer David King and pianist Ethan Iverson, who will be leaving the group after the final concert of this tour on New Year’s Eve at the Village Vanguard in New York City. Pianist, Orrin Evans, a longtime friend and musical colleague of the band, will become the new member of the trio. One of Outpost’s favorite bands over the years, we are honored that The Bad Plus is making Outpost a stop on their final tour with Iverson who, incidentally, will be performing at Outpost in the spring 2018 season – stay tuned!). “By any standard, jazz or otherwise, it is moving, mighty music...bad to the bone, hot players with hard-rock hearts.” (Rolling Stone’s review of The Bad Plus’ 2013 release, Made Possible).
