SUMMARY:Folk Music across Time and Culture: Defining Generations through So
 ng
DESCRIPTION:with performer and educator\, Chris Nolan.&nbsp\;Traditional fo
lk music has been defined in several ways: as music that develops and evol
ves through oral tradition\, as music of the lower classes and as music fr
om unknown composers. It&rsquo\;s contrasted with commercial and classical
styles and is the mantle often given to old songs with no known composers
. The only two constants for a folk song are the story telling aspect of t
he lyrics and the melody. During the mid-20th century\, a new form of popu
lar folk music evolved from traditional folk music\, reaching a zenith in
the 1960&rsquo\;s. Many of our &ldquo\;popular songs&rdquo\; have long and
colorful histories. These wonderful songs with similar themes have emerge
d from every culture\, educating and entertaining generation after generat
ion through the centuries.&nbsp\; Join recording and performing artist\, C
hris Nolan on a musical journey through traditional and popular folk songs
.&nbsp\;Chris Nolan has written over 200 original songs\, recorded several
CDs and produced and performed on CDs for other musicians. He performs at
coffee houses\, for weddings\, and private parties as a one-man-band. Chr
is has worked on over 30 musicals with ACLOA\, MTS\, Alb. Little Theatre a
nd for UNM and has taught guitar/bass lessons in Albuquerque since 1981. C
hris earned two bachelor degrees: Theory & Composition and Music Education
and a Master&rsquo\;s Degree in Music from UNM. He composed a Suite of Va
riations based on an Alaskan folk song for his Thesis.&nbsp\;The Osher Lif
elong Learning Institute was established through a grant from the Bernard
Osher Foundation in 2007 and membership in the Osher community is open to
adults age 50 plus who are seeking intellectually challenging\, psychologi
cally probing and spiritually engaging learning opportunities. Membership
