DESCRIPTION:Concordia Santa Fe presents Igor Stravinsky&rsquo\;s landmark w
 ork in a chamber performance featuring guest violinist Prof. John Gilbert 
 of Texas Tech University and student actors from the New Mexico School for
  the Arts.Dr. Sarah McKoin\, also of Texas Tech University\, will conduct 
 the musicians in performance. &nbsp\; L'Histoire du soldat tells the story
  of a soldier who trades his violin to the devil\, in exchange for a magic
 al book that contains events of the future. He quickly gains wealth from h
 is foreknowledge of coming events\, but soon realizes that this material w
 ealth does not bring happiness. He later wins back his violin in a card ga
 me with the devil\, wakes a lovely maiden with his beautiful playing\, and
  conquers the devil with his irresistible music. &nbsp\; After deciding to
  program L&rsquo\;Histoire du Soldat\, Concordia Santa Fe&rsquo\;s board o
 f directors contacted Joey Chavez\, chair of the theatre department at the
  New Mexico School for the Arts\, who responded enthusiastically about the
  possibility of collaborating on the performance. He enrolled colleague Ac
 ushla Bastible to direct the actors in preparation of the work. Student ac
 tors will play the parts of the Soldier\, the Devil\, and the Narrator. &n
 bsp\; Dr. Sarah McKoin returns to Santa Fe for her third engagement with C
 oncordia Santa Fe\, having led the 40-member large ensemble on two previou
 s occasions. She is Director of Bands at Texas Tech University\, where she
  conducts the Texas Tech University Wind Ensemble and teaches all levels o
 f conducting and wind literature. Dr. McKoin maintains an active schedule 
 as a guest conductor and clinician\, and is committed to performing litera
 ture of today&rsquo\;s prominent composers. &nbsp\; Violinist John Haspel 
 Gilbert is an active soloist\, recitalist and chamber music collaborator\,
  who regularly performs throughout the United States\, Europe\, and Latin 
 America. Appointed to the faculty of the Texas Tech University School of M
 usic as Artist-Performer and Professor of Violin in 1995\, he is a sought 
 after clinician and adjudicator. Gilbert is also currently serving as conc
 ertmaster of the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra\, and his recordings are avail
 able on the Naxos\, Innova\, and Centaur labels. This concert marks Profes
 sor Gilbert&rsquo\;s first collaboration with Concordia Santa Fe.
