Learn the true history and origins of the evil little man who thought he'd play a trick on the miller’s pretty daughter.
The ancient tales don't tell us where he came from--who he was before he became so angry--nor do they tell us what happened to him after he stomped his way into the dungeon. The Desert Rose Playhouse retells the story for the holidays, bringing many well-loved as well as lesser known fairy tale characters to the story of Rumplestiltskin.
The new story, written and directed by local playwright Sarah Sayles, follows “Rum” from his youth to find out what makes him tick. From an ever-hungry wolf to a happy-go-lucky princess with a curse on her head, the cast weaves a tale that lasts for more than 20 years and sets the stage for Rumplestiltskin to come to be. And everyone has an opportunity for redemption, forgiveness, and even love. More than a wonderful seasonal story, this show encourages children to read and learn about music of the medieval period. Schools can request a reading list; a CD of the music (created through a Creative Commons license) can be made available. Links to several of the related fairy tales can be found on the theatre’s web site at desertroseplayhouse.com. Rumplestiltskin opens December 7 and runs through December 23. Showtimes are Fridays and Saturdays at 7 pm and Sundays at 2 pm. Tickets are $12 for general admission, $10 for students and seniors, and $8 for children under 12. The Desert Rose, at 6921 Montgomery Blvd, NE, is wheelchair accessible and accepts all major credit cards. Group discounts will be available. Reservations are recommended.
