Multimedia essay by Sara Schultz. The exhibit will be on display until January 15th, 2012. Dust features people from New Mexican communities nestled between the wor ld's largest open-pit uranium mine and an enormous pile of toxic silt, or tailings pile. Both toxic sites lay open to New Mexico's powerful winds, unattended, and often unmarked. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's 2011 five-year review of the Homestake/Barrick Gold mill's abandoned tailings pile states that ambient radon levels at the boundary of the site far exceed what they consider acceptable or safe. All of Sara's subjects have been negatively affected by the mineral extraction activities in some way.
