Presentation by geologist Dirk Van Hart on the geology and long-forgotten history of the 152-mile-long "Old New Mexico Route 44" that connects Bernalillo in the central Rio Grande Valley with Bloomfield in the San Juan River Valley to the northwest.
Dirk has designed his talk for the non-geologist. Once referred to as the "killer road" due to its deadly narrow stretches, Old 44 in 2000 was reconstructed as a modern four-lane thoroughfare and re-designated as the southern leg of US-550. This fascinating road has something for everyone.Admission is $5. Free for members.
