Discussion with author Saru Jayaraman, whose new book follows the lives of restaurant workers in nine major cities.

Meet Saru Jayaraman, author of "Behind the Kitchen Door" at this free one-time only Albuquerque Book Release event on Sunday, April 7th, 2013 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm at the First Unitarian Church of Albuquerque, 3701 Carlisle Blvd NE, Albuquerque 87110ROC-United and the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) invite you to a discussion with Saru Jayaraman, co-director of the Restaurant Opportunities Centers United, about her newly released book Behind the Kitchen Door. How do restaurant workers live on some of the lowest wages in America? And how do poor working conditions--discrimination, exploitation, and unsanitary kitchens--affect the meals that arrive at our restaurant tables?  In Behind the Kitchen Door, Saru Jayaraman sets out to answer these questions by following the lives of restaurant workers in nine major cities. Blending personal narrative and investigative journalism, Behind the Kitchen Door is a groundbreaking exploration of the political, economic, and moral implications of dining out. Jayaraman sets out a bold agenda to raise the living standards of the nation's second-largest private sector workforce--and ensure that dining out is a positive experience on both sides of the kitchen door. Check out Saru on CNN’s “Starting Point” with Soledad O’Brien discussing the issues in Behind The Kitchen Door.  She has also been recently interviewed by Bill Moyers of PBS and Chris Hayes of MSNBC at which Saru provides a compelling argument for the need of supporting restaurant workers on a multitude of levels as well as to discuss the need to work with restaurant owners to take the “High Road” when dealing with work-place issues. The event is located at the intersection of Carlisle & Comanche Blvd NE. Parking is available in office complex lot west of the church (entrance off Comanche) or in the ARC building lot south of the church (entrance off Carlisle).
