Albuquerque loves art of every stripe—from chimerical landscapes to avant-garde clay collage, we’re nuts for gazing at, talking over and buying pieces in countless mediums. Maybe our appreciation comes from being surrounded every day by natural wonders of light and color. Maybe it’s because so many creative misfits wander into the desert and never make it out again. Either way, if you’d like to get in on the thriving art scene, you’ll want to give ARTScrawl a whirl. The citywide event, in which galleries stay open late and proudly showcase some of their best and newest work, connects Burque art lovers with the plentiful galleries squeezed into every corner of the city. This Friday, July 5, standout offerings include Don Best’s segmented, turned-wood works (The Gallery ABQ, 8210 Menaul NE), the vintage collectibles show Not (Necessarily) Your Grandpa’s Radio (Palette Contemporary, 7400 Montgomery NE), and the “automatic mark-making” and sculptures of Chuck Lathrop (Leich Lathrop Gallery, 323 Romero NW). The free fun gets underway everywhere at 5 p.m. and lasts as late as 9 p.m. in some galleries, so take a little time to celebrate the visual extravaganza before your Friday night revelry gets underway.
