An adaptation by Tony Kushner of L'Illusion Comique, originally written in 1636 by Pierre Corneille.

The Ilusion follows a contrite father, Pridamant, seeking news of his prodigal son from the sorcerer Alcandre. The magician conjures three episodes from the young man’s life. Inexplicably, each scene finds the boy in a slightly different world where names change and allegiances shift. Pridamant watches, but only as the strange tale reaches its conclusion does he learn the ultimate truth about his son.

Get caught in Illusion

Ready to step into a world of romance, lyricism and illusion? Mother Road ushers in its 2013/2014 season with Tony Kushner's The Illusion. Adapted from Pierre Corneille's 17th century comedy, L’Illusion Comique, the story follows a grieved and dying lawyer, Pridamant, desperate to find the prodigal son he drove out years before. In his searching, he engages the help of Alcandre, a sorcerer who conjures three visions of the son’s post-expulsion life. With each new vision, Pridamant's boy changes, along with the names of his comrades and his devotion to each. While Kushner is widely known for his sociopolitical commentaries such as Angels in America, the more whimsical The Illusion promises a tribute to passion, enchantment and love. The show features a veteran cast and runs through Sept. 29. Showings are Thursday through Sunday at the MTS Center for Theater (6320 Domingo NE, Ste. B) and tickets cost $24 ($15 on Thursdays). For more information visit or call 243-0596. (Rebecca Gonzales)
