Working Classroom celebrates its 25th anniversary with the production by Octavio Solis, directed by founding director Monica Sanchez.
Featuring Gabriela Mayorga and Richard McClarkin, who made their stage debuts under Ms. Sanchezâs direction in 1999 and a talented cast from Working Classroomâs Ensemble Theater Company.
WHAT: Set in the borderlands between Mexico and Texas where narcotics, NAFTA, immigration, family, cultural and sexual identities collide., Dreamlandia by Octavio Solis is a bold re-telling of the Spanish classic, Life Is A Dream by Calderon de la Barca. Three centuries later, Solis imbues the ephemeral theme of the original with another timely layer: Dreamlandia as the âAmerican Dreamâ, with its own contradictions, absurdities and intangibilities revealed through flights of lyrical brilliance and brutal realism.
WHO: Playwright Octavio Solis, originally from El Paso, Texas, is one of the most prolific and prominent Latino playwrights produced in the United States. Director and native New Mexican Monica Sanchez, is the founding director of Working Classroomâs theater program. In a twenty-year California-based career, Sanchez has worked with many nationally prominent theater companies, appeared in several network television series and many films. She recently returned to Albuquerque as Working Classroomâs artistic director. The cast includes veterans and newer members of Working Classroomâs award-winning ensemble theater company.
WHERE: The Paul Carpenter y Salazar Theater in Working Classroomâs Youth Art Center, 423 Atlantic SW, in Barelas, just south of downtown Albuquerque.
WHEN: August 10-25. Fridays-Saturdays at 7:30 pm. Sunday matinees @ 2:00 pm.
DETAILS. This production honors and celebrates Working Classroomâs 25th anniversary. We are proud and excited to embark on the âDreamâ with a cast of returning alumni, current conservatory students and several additional outstanding local actors.
