Fast Heart Mart • The Palace Flophouse • folk

Virginia Not-so-plain

Fast Heart Mart is typically an outdoor phenomenon. When I last saw him play, it happened in Little Kiss Records' backyard. The crowd was small, but when a “sonic folk music” act gets veteran rocker Gordy Andersen, of Black Maria, fired up, you know its purveyor has that indefinable something. Fast Heart Mart may no longer call Burque home, but it's easy to surmise that the high desert will always instinctively recognize his sound. He may prefer busking to concerts, but he's one of those performers who gives 110 percent at every gig, indoor or out. Bear witness to Fast Heart Mart—so nicknamed for a mysterious illness—along with Urbana, Ill.-based indie-folk band The Palace Flophouse and talented local AJ Woods. This 21-and-over show tunes up at 9pm on Friday, Aug. 30, and admission is only five bucks. (Samantha Anne Carrillo)
