A screening of Gasland II, an illuminating documentary on the horrors of hydraulic fracturing (fracking).
Doors will open at 11am and the screening will commence at Noon. Afterwards we'll have a question and answer session with fracking activists from northern New Mexico who were at the forefront of getting the first county wide ban on fracking in the nation here in Mora county, NM.Last year, activists in over 200 communities in 20 countries around the world came together through the Global Frackdown to challenge hydraulic fracturing (fracking), a risky technique that uses millions of gallons of water, sand and chemicals to break open shale rock deep underground to release previously unrecoverable deposits of gas. Fracking threatens the air we breathe, the water we drink, the communities we love and the climate on which we all depend. Together as a movement since the first-ever Global Frackdown, we have made great strides. France and Bulgaria banned fracking. The Spanish region of Cantabria also banned the practice, and moratoria are in place in Ireland, the Czech Republic and Lithuania. Recently, Cinco Saltos and six communities in Argentina banned fracking. Great efforts to mobilize citizens to oppose fracking are also taking place in North Africa and South Africa. In the United States, we have kept fracking out of New York; launched Americans Against Fracking, a national coalition composed of over 200 organizations; won a key ballot victory in Longmont, Colorado... and the movement continues to grow. But our work is far from over. The oil and gas industry continues its insatiable drive to frack the planet, and in a recent speech, President Obama identified developing fracked gas as a pillar of his plan for addressing climate change. But fracking will only exacerbate the challenges facing our planet, our communities and our shared resources. The theater is small so if you would like to reserve a seat.
