He goes on to say that, “Through the years I have acquired literally hundreds, if not thousands, of tribal items. Some I keep on display in my studio. Their unique beauty is eternally inspiring.” Don’s new body of paintings draws on ceremonial and ethnic artifacts like tarnished Peruvian wedding beads, antique smoke scented African masks, ledgers, Mexican retablos and handwritten musical scores. “It’s intriguing to me that a ledger from the 30’s, found in an antique store, has somehow made its way from the backroom of a livestock feed store to eventually end up in one of my paintings hanging on the pristine wall of an art gallery.” Don has an enduring fascination with botanicals and nature that continues to inform and inspire his work. He uses Venetian plaster as a base and while it is still wet he scores and marks the surface. He sands and burnishes the surface, revealing under painting and subsequently he draws and adds compositional elements between layers of paint creating the foundation for each work.
