UNM Truman Health Services is pleased to host the internationally recognized AIDS Memorial Quilt.

When HIV made its first appearance in the 1980’s, social stigma surrounding the virus was so toxic that individuals who had died from complications due to the virus were not memorialized and often did not even receive funerals. In 1987, that changed when a group of activists in San Francisco gathered to create a visual reminder of AIDS and to commemorate the lives of friends, lovers, and family members. Word of the Quilt spread quickly. By later that same year, nearly 2,000 panels had been created and were displayed for the first time in their entirety on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Today, the Quilt continues to grow currently consisting of more than 48,000 individual panels. Panels from the quilt  will be available for viewing at the following locations:  SUB Ballroom SUB Atrium Domenici Atrium Popejoy HallPlease join us at the following locations to view panels from the Quilt and to honor those who have been affected by HIV/AIDS.
