Guitarist/composer Mary Halvorson completed her jazz studies at Wesleyan University and the New School and has been active in New York since 2002. Critics have called her “NYC’s least-predictable improviser” (Howard Mandel, City Arts), “the most forward-thinking guitarist working right now” (Lars Gotrich, NPR.org) and “one of today’s most formidable bandleaders” (Francis Davis, Village Voice). In addition to her longstanding trio, and her quintet with whom she performs tonight, Halvorson also co-leads a chamber-jazz duo with violist Jessica Pavone, the avant-rock band, People, and the collective ensembles Thumbscrew, Reverse Blue, and Secret Keeper. She is also an active member of bands led by Tim Berne, Anthony Braxton, Myra Melford, and Tom Rainey, among many others. The Mary Halvorson Quintet’s recent recording, Bending Bridges was “one of the year’s most eagerly anticipated albums…and confirms Halvorson as an artist whose originality as a guitarist is no fiercer than her originality as a writer. Simply put, no one is making music like this.” (Lloyd Sachs, JazzTimes) In addition to Mary Halvorson on guitar, the Mary Halvoroson Quintet features four long-time collaborators: Jonathan Finlayson, trumpet; Jon Irabagon, alto saxophone; John Hébert, bass; & Ches Smith, drums.

After her Burque gig, NYC free jazz stalwart Mary Halvorson’s next recital finds her keeping company with John Zorn. If that doesn’t clue you in to her avant-jazz chops, you’re probably not the target audience for this show, but never mind that. If you like your jazz guitar effects-laden, pitch-bended and thoroughly post-conventional, this is a shouldn’t-miss. Renowned improviser Halvorson’s quintet also features Jonathan Finlayson (trumpet), Jon Irabagon (alto saxophone), John Hébert (bass) and Ches Smith (drums). Get your highfalutin, Big Apple jazz fix at Outpost Performance Space (210 Yale SE) on Thursday, Dec. 19. This rarefied all-ages recital kicks off at 7:30pm, and admission will run you $15 to $20.
