Following two Mexican-American girls carrying a gilded tradition on their young shoulders during a time of economic uncertainty and political tension over immigration.

Potential Partners: Young Women United, MLP, UNM Dreamers, immigration service orgs, Catholic Charities, Lutheran immigration service … Dating from the aftermath of the Spanish-American War, the annual debutante ball in Laredo, Texas is unlike any other. Las Marthas follows two Mexican American girls carrying this gilded tradition on their young shoulders during a time of economic uncertainty and political tension over immigration. Concessions will be available. Community Cinema is a groundbreaking public education and civic engagement initiative featuring monthly screenings of films for the Emmy Award-winning PBS series 'Independent Lens'. Every month between September and June, Community Cinema brings together leading organizations, community members and public television stations to learn, discuss and get involved in today's critical social issues. On Wednesday, Jan. 29, your New Mexico PBS stations join forces with the KiMo Theatre (423 Central NW) to present another Community Cinema event. Starting at 7pm, there will be a free sneak preview screening of the “Independent Lens” documentary Las Marthas. The film introduces viewers to an annual debutante ball in Laredo, Texas—a tradition that dates back to the Spanish-American War. Las Marthas follows two Mexican-American girls “carrying this gilded tradition on their young shoulders during a time of economic uncertainty and political tension over immigration.” After the film there will be a discussion of issues raised by the film featuring local organizations and community members.
