Born in Kita, Mali, Master Kora player, Yacouba Sissoko hails from the Djely griot tradition. He learned to play Kora from his grandfather and his grandmother and mother were both reknown musicians in Mali. His ability to play a wide range of musical styles from jazz, to Latin and R & B bands to traditional African ceremonies, has made him one of the most in demand kora players in the world. He toured and performed with the 45-piece band, Ensemble Koteba of Abidjan for five years in the 1990’s and has since performed with Regina Carter, Baba Maal, Leni Stern and others. He has also recorded with Harry Belafonte and Paul Simon. As leader of his own band, SIYA, and a member of the group Super Mande, he continues to record with renowned groups like the Source, Tamalalou and Fula Flute. SIYA features Sissoko on kora and vocals; Rachel Therrien, trumpet; Moussa Diabate, n'goni; Moussa Kone, guitar; and Idrissa Kone, talking drum and calebasse (calabash).
