Somethin' is Brewin' in Burque
If you still haven't gotten around to checking out Tractor Brewery's new Downtown location at 1800 Fourth Street NW, then Sunday, July 20, is a great day to head out there, as Tractor will be holding the third and final round of the 12th annual IPA Challenge. Collaborating with the New Mexico Brewers Guild (yes, this does actually exist), Tractor Brewery Wells Park is giving every Burque beer lover a chance to sample IPAs by local beer brewers all over the state and decide which contestant will take home the blue ribbon. Twenty bucks gets you a seat on the panel with the other thirsty judges. This showcase kicks off at Noon on Sunday, so you and your discerning taste buds will need to head on over to Tractor's new Downtown location straight from church. If you're not the church-going type, you can get your religion at the brewery as well, with favorite locals The Porter Draw bringing their tunes of moonshine and redemption to the Tractor stage. The challenge concludes around 6pm so you can get yourself home safely and rest that jiggling belly, or stay out and reward yourself with another strange brew for a job of judging well-done. Try a number of IPAs, and see who makes the best beverage.
When it comes to bragging rights across the New Mexico craft beer landscape, no other title is as coveted or respected as the champion of the IPA Challenge.
In 2002 a group of nine breweries banded together to create the original competition based solely on this iconic beverage. As visionaries, they understood the only way to truly know who made the best IPA was to let the public be the judge. Now in its 12th running, the annual IPA Challenge brings together the best and the brightest brewery talent in a showcase event that tours the state asking you to be the judge.
Each ticket buys your seat at the table… you become the expert… a beer judge!
Each Judge receives a tray of 16 cups filled with IPA from around the state.
The cups are numbered for this blind tasting – sniff, sip, swish, swirl and swallow.
Take your time to complete a full sensory evaluation and pick your favorite.
Each Judge is allowed one vote, and your vote is rewarded with a full pint.
Voting is cumulative, so a beer may be popular one night but scarcely receive a vote at the next location. This year the IPA Challenge will take place in Santa Fe, Portales and culminate in Albuquerque.
