Ray Charles’ recordings often had two keyboards on hand, says drummer Cal Haines, with Charles playing piano or Rhodes, and the backing band’s keyboardist on organ. To get that sound for “Dreams of Yesterday: Tribute to Ray Charles,” Haines has pulled together a stellar local band that features two guys who know how to radiate the eighty-eights, Jim Ahrend and Bert Dalton. They’ll be joined by Haines, the absurdly funky Glenn Kostur on woodwinds, and Andy Zadrozny, a newcomer from Seattle, on bass. Inspiration for their instrumental jazz renditions will come from Charles’ wide-ranging catalog and two more recent recordings: Ray Sings, Basie Swings, a magical blending of archival Charles vocals and the current Basie band, and John Scofield’s tribute recording, That’s What I Say.
