  • Do the Lit 'n' Lunch

Frederick Douglass said, “Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.” Help others free themselves by going to the Fifth Annual Luncheon for Literacy on Sunday, June 25, from 11am-2pm. The event is a fundraiser for Reading Works, a nonprofit that provides free literacy tutoring to adults. A $70 ticket will give you entrée to a literacy bazaar, a plated lunch, a performance by Albuquerque's all female a cappella group Q Chorus and a talk by Jimmy Santiago Baca—one of the “best poets in America today.” All ages are welcome to support this excellent cause at Hotel Albuquerque. • I'll pray for you

When I was a teenager, my friend was telling me about a rough day he had at work and how he had to take a moment to pray. I was confused—how can a prayer make your day better? Then he described it: He moved out of the garage and leaned on a wall, closed his eyes and focused on the ideal version of himself with his god. Then it clicked for me—praying is a type of meditation. After that, I became open to the idea, so much so that when I heard about author Celeste Yacoboni's book, How Do You Pray? I did a double take. Yacoboni will speak about this work that covers how leading spiritual, shamanic, scientific teachers, guides and activists pray and how their prayers have changed over their lifetime. You can learn all about this fascinating topic at Bookworks this Tuesday, June 27, from 6-7:30pm for free. (Rini Grammer)
