Gentlemen, Gold Street is a great place to shop for ladies, so this where our journey begins, and Glowing (1, 317 Gold SW, 243-GLOW) is the first store in the row. If, like me, the prospect of pregnancy makes you shudder, steer clear of this store because with it's über-stylish, high-end maternity clothing and baby paraphernalia you may begin to think the whole idea isn't so bad, after all. If you've impregnated someone this holiday season, you're pretty much obligated to go here for a gift certificate. (And if you want to impregnate someone, the lovely lingerie seller Seventh Goddess is right next door.)
Next is the delightful Ooh Aah Jewelry (2, 311 Gold SW, 242-7101), which I've always been afraid to enter because of what I might find: beautiful, expensive jewelry that I can't have. Au contraire! With the motto "affordable style," modern and traditional settings and almost every fathomable stone (including gorgeous 2,000-year-old Roman glass), Ooh Aah's prices range from $10 to $2,000. The store also carries other gift items, including things for men, and they'll wrap your gifts for you!
Moving on, Ruby Shoesday (3, 228 Gold SW, 848-RUBY) sells shoes and handbags, every single one desire-inducing and so well designed that each should be appreciated as a work of art. The store also does gift certificates and registries.
The next stop is Patrician Design, Caliente—It's Hot! (4, 216 Gold SW, 242-7646), a functional art emporium and interior design studio featuring fine to functional items suitable for a variety of budgets. Here I found amazing glass candleholders, lamps, paintings and fragrances.
When you're finished, go across the street to YogaNow (5, 215 Gold SW, 232-4717) where you can purchase a class package, or get it from their website, www.yoganow.org. The final stop on Gold should be made for that loved one who's into, say, Brazilian waxes. Chez Dor Salon and Day Spa (6, 117 Gold SW, 243-6777) offers them along with other salon/spa amenities and gift certificates.
The next few stops require some driving, since this is the last minute and you probably don't have time for a leisurely stroll. You'll want to cruise over and check out the Gertrude Zachary tag team: Gertrude Zachary Jewelry (7, 1501 Lomas NW, 247-4442) and Gertrude Zachary Secret Antiques (8, 416 Second Street SW, 244-1320). On Lomas you've got a large range in price and style, and on Second Street you have an antique store with a mixture of American and European items, small and large for both indoors and outdoors.
Afterwards, La Tiendita (9, at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, 1701 Fourth Street SW, 766-6604) is a good place to pick up New Mexican and Latin American artisan gifts all wrapped up for free. Finally, motoring up to EDo for a little 2 Time Couture (10, 600 Central SE, 242-3600) action—affordable, used designer fashion on consignment—may just round out your rapid shopping experience. Now you can feel free to go home and worry about other holiday-related annoyances.
