Best Wine Shop
Trader Joe's. I like the selection. You can get good wine at a cheap price. Two Buck Chuck is my favorite.
Best Downtown Bar
Anodyne. The bartenders are not stingy with the alcohol. It's just a nice environment to hang out. A huge variety of people hang out there.
Best Outdoor Mural
I love the mural on the corner of Tenth Street and Coal. It's an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe and a little girl in a cornfield. I just think it's cool. It's refreshing to be driving around in that area and see it. It's been there for a while.
Best Architectural Gem
The building on the northeast corner of Third Street and Central. I guess they're calling it The Banque. It's beautiful architecture. I'm so pleased they're preserving it. A very attractive building, very classic.
Best Architectural Nightmare
The new one they're building across the street. I think it's called the Carom Club. It's on the northwest corner of Third Street and Central. It's trying too hard. It's sticking out there saying, “Look at me. Look at how modern I am.” It couldn't stand the same test of time as the one across the street.
Chani's on Central. It moved. It's on Central next to Milton's. It's a great barbershop, because the hairstylist's very personable. She'll vacuum your hair, so when you're done, you're ready to go. She vacuums, massages and scratches your back before you go.
Best Local Crackpot
The guy on the corner of Central and Sixth Street, on the northwest corner. He's always been there, for years, with boxes on his feet. He's there at eight in the morning and leaves at five. It's like his office. When I go by, he spits at me, and I don't know if it's a message from God, but he always lets me know I'm a disgrace to the human race. He kind of makes me think, “OK, what am I doing wrong? What does this guy know?”
Best Item You Can Make Out of a Copy of the Alibi
I used it many times to create papier-mâché items. I used it to create a helmet for my son's Halloween costume.
