  • She made the kessel run in less than twelve parsecs.  [ Sat Nov 15 2008 2:39 AM ]

The last question is nonsensical. A light-year is a measure of distance (how far light can travel in a year), not a measure of time. The sun will enter it's red giant stage in 5 billion years, which is what I assume you were getting at since the answer is C, but a billion years is not even close to the same thing as a light-year.

  • A sewer rat may taste like pumpkin pie.  [ Sat Nov 15 2008 2:56 AM ]

abbacaab, you are right about the pigs however they were allowed to eat goats. In fact a large number of Hebrews were goat-herders in their nomadic days, and goats were a very common sacrifice (sacrificing unclean animals was worse than eating them).

    Deuteronomy 14:

3 Do not eat any detestable thing. 4 These are the animals you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat, 5 the deer, the gazelle, the roe deer, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope and the mountain sheep. 6 You may eat any animal that has a split hoof divided in two and that chews the cud. 7 However, of those that chew the cud or that have a split hoof completely divided you may not eat the camel, the rabbit or the coney. Although they chew the cud, they do not have a split hoof; they are ceremonially unclean for you. 8 The pig is also unclean; although it has a split hoof, it does not chew the cud. You are not to eat their meat or touch their carcasses.

There is a similar passage in Leviticus 11. If goat is not considered Kosher today, it must have been a later development, because I can't find anything in the Old Testament that forbids it.

  • I'm wrong  [ Sun Nov 16 2008 2:15 PM ]

Of course goats are acceptable to eat. I don't know what I was thinking. But pigs are a big one. I thought everyone knew that. I actually didn't know that rabbits were forbidden - that surprized me. Reading the Bible, I also found that oysters, lobsters and other shellfish are forbidden. I'm sure glad I'm not Jewish! I love that stuff!

  • 20 Questions #20  [ Mon Nov 17 2008 8:22 AM ]

Pavon pointed out the obvious. The terminology is incorrect or the proposed answer is incorrect.

Assuming the question is actually "If the sun died, how long will it take before people on Earth to know it" the stated answer of c: 5 minutes is incorrect. The distance from the Earth to the sun is around 93 million miles, or about 8 light minutes (.25 millionths of a light year). A "light-year" is a measure of distance. In terms of light-years, the correct answer would be a: Less than one.

If the question was mistakenly light-years, and actually meant light-minutes, the answer would be d: 8.

On the other hand, if the question is how long before the sun "dies" and becomes a red giant, the answer would be "in about 4 billion years."

  • How long  [ Mon Nov 17 2008 8:35 AM ]

"If the sun died, how long will it take before people on Earth to know it"

Some people figure it out faster than others.
