The metaphysical health jumb-ill
Thoughts about a harmonious balance between the body, mind and world—let’s call this health and vitality—extend back to the dawn of history. In many traditions, these views are often refined over centuries of practice and study.
Now the marvels of modern medicine, as flashy and effective as they can be, are a relatively new arrival onto the healing scene.
Yet percolating within modern medicine is a bizarre conundrum. Increasingly troubled big pharmaceutical companies are finding that the placebo effect, their biggest enemy, is getting stronger.
“It's not that the old meds are getting weaker, drug developers say. It's as if the placebo effect is somehow getting stronger,” writes Steve Silberman in a recent article in Wired. “The fact that an increasing number of medications are unable to beat sugar pills has thrown the industry into crisis.”
I’d like to posit that, like an electron, this enigma has two faces, or spins; as if the enigma itself has an independent intelligence. Spin down: We call it placebo. Spin up: We call her Mother Nature.
Like the word placebo, the jumble is a spin-down, derogatory medical term for a harmful relationship between health and the imaginal realm.
