    Agree or Disagree?

I have some minor issues with this popularity contest list. Generally a good job, but you should read my comments on my blog — Larry's Albuquerque Food Musings.

  • Best New Mexican  [ Mon Oct 10 2011 6:36 PM ]

Larry and everybody else: What's with the Mary & Tito's obsession? I found it to be sub par. Not that Sadie's is the best either. I'll take Cervantes, El Patio, Duran Central Pharmacy, Sophia's Place or even Frontier over those two any day.

  • Mary y Tito's  [ Tue Oct 11 2011 12:53 PM ]

Their chile is unique. My wife prefers (that is to say, requires) the meatless versions, which are not vegetarian but lack the ground beef bits. Sometimes the chile is really hot, sometimes not so hot, but always ultra-flavorful. Once in a while I'll get an off meal there, but mostly it is reliable.

They also don't smother everything in orange cheese, which is a rare virtue in the New Mexican food world. The chile is front and center, as it should be.

I honestly don't know why people like Sadie's except for the potent margaritas. OK, maybe that's reason enough. Cervantes can be good, but the last time I ate there the chile was so mild it was a waste of my stomach's time to digest it. Never had a decent meal at El Patio, but then again only ate there a couple of times.

Duran Central has its charms, but when I'm not eating at Mary and Tito's, I prefer Barelas Coffee House, which also boasts a unique green chile, often brutally hot. Almost all the good NM food seems to come from breakfast-and-lunch joints like that. The dinner places are mostly overpriced and under-delicious.
